The Republic of Moldova must continue its pro-European path and strengthen its relations with Romania. This will bring security and wellbeing to the country, journalist of the publication Podul.ro Constantin Dicusar stated in a public debate staged by IPN. According to him, the Ukrainian military fights to ensure peace and stability in Europe and the countries of the civilized world must help Ukraine to cope with Russia’s barbaric attacks.

The journalist noted that the war in Ukraine has created problems for neighboring countries, including Romania and Moldova, accentuating the populist rhetoric of the pro-Russian parties in the two countries.

“The Republic of Moldova, due to its principled position of solidarity with the Ukrainian people, had to break its economic ties with the Russian Federation. There is practically no export market to Russia for Moldovan products. For the Republic of Moldova, the biggest problem is security, both internal and external one. In the Transnistrian region, we have illegally stationed Russian occupation troops, which put pressure on the entire society. For Romania, 2024 is very important from an electoral point of view. Elections will be held in Romania, which will determine the dynamics of the relations with the Republic of Moldova. There are many warnings from experts - that populist, extremist parties that openly promote Russian propaganda would gain ground in Romania,” said Constantin Dicusar.

According to the journalist, the partner countries will continue to support Ukraine militarily and financially, understanding that the Ukrainian army, by resisting Russian barbarism, ensures peace all over Europe.

“Ukraine enjoys the support of the entire civilized world. Until the American establishment solves its internal problems and a consensus is reached on military support for Ukraine, there are other states that can provide important military aid to the Ukrainian state, such as Norway. Also, Romania has committed itself to become involved in the restoration of everything that means electronic systems. Russia also stages cyberattacks against Ukrainian institutions, and Romania’s contribution will have its say in this regard. It is expected that until the situation regarding the U.S. aid is clarified, the other partners will not abandon Ukraine. Ukraine is fighting for freedom and peace in Europe. Consequently, I don’t think the allies will abandon Ukraine,” said Constantin Dicusar.

He noted that only Moldova’s accession to the European Union and NATO can provide the country with welfare and security, while the presidential election of 2024 and the parliamentary elections of 2025 are a test in this regard.

“It is important for Moldova to maintain its pro-European and pro-Romanian course. We will also have elections in Moldova in 2024 and 2025. The citizens must understand that the path and, subsequently, the accession to the EU will bring us benefits, prosperity. If NATO-phobia is overcome, if we take the step towards NATO, we will also have security. Bilaterally, Moldova must strengthen its relations with Romania,” explained the journalist.

The public debate entitled “War and Peace in 2024” was the 298th installment of IPN’s project “Developing Political Culture through Public Debates” which is supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation of Germany.
