Constantin Codreanu, of the National Unity Party (PUN), said Romania is the only chance for the municipality of Chisinau to overcome the current problems and become part of the European Union. He promised that if he is elected mayor, he will unite all the inhabitants of Chisinau, regardless of ethnicity, spoken language and confession, but will not renounce his unionist ideas as he is convinced that Chisinau does not have a future without the union with Romania. The candidate presented his platform in the second round of the public debate “I ask you to elect me mayor because...” that was staged by IPN News Agency.

Constantin Codreanu said his electoral program covers a period of five years and this is called “Union, development, modernization”. By his program, he aims to achieve an objective in which he believes and for which he has struggled for over 15 years, recently also as a member of Romania’s Parliament – the union. After he is elected mayor of Chisinau, he will continue to promote Moldova’s union with Romania. “My program focuses on the problems experienced by Chisinau. It is enough to leave home and we see roads of a poor quality, a very ugly exterior of Chisinau, people who are dissatisfied with the current public transport system and their living conditions,” stated the candidate.

He noted the situation in which Chisinau is now is due to the fact that the previous administrations ignored the general urban development plan as, for them, the size of the bribe given by those who went to corrupt functionaries of the City Hall was more important. He is a young man who wasn’t involved in Moldovan politics and comes up with new, European views to change the current state of affairs. He will make sure that the city obtains Romanian funds through twining agreements and concrete projects.

Constantin Codreanu said the current elections involve unionists who didn’t feel represented by the candidates who were registered as election runners before him. The decision to run was taken following consultations with the unionist movement and with two parties that supported him, including with those who voted for him in the parliamentary elections held in Romania in December 2015. “We all struggle for a cause, not for a party or a person and this should be the view of a politician in the Republic of Moldova, in Chisinau municipality,” he stated.

The candidate said his short activity as a politician allowed him to realize that the people are wiser than some of the politicians believe. The politicians should be sincere with the citizens and should not lie to them and offer them solutions for tomorrow only. “I’m young and motivated to do great things. But I’m also one of those who realize the importance of deeds, not only of words, and who does things besides making promises. I’m the only one who will ensure the European course of Chisinau through Romania,” he concluded.

According to ADEPT executive director Igor Botan, the project’s standing expert, the age and his non-involvement in politics in Moldova are the biggest advantages of Constantin Codreanu. Even if he is young, he is a member of Romania’s Parliament and his lack of experience of working in the local public administration is offset by his good team as he has from whom to learn things and can bring funds for developing Chisinau.

The public debate “I ask you to elect me mayor because...” was the 90th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture through political debates” that are financially supported by the German Foundation “Hanns Seidel”.
