The candidate for mayor of Chisinau of the National Unity Party (PUN) Constantin Codreanu, which hasn’t been yet registered officially, kicked off his campaign prior to the mayoral elections. In the central park of Chisinau “Stefan cel Mare” on April 11, Constantin Codreanu presented his working program as a mayor. The event involved the president of honor of the PUN Traian Basescu, ex-President of Romania, IPN reports.
Constantin Codreanu assured the pensioners that they will receive financial support and promised that he will open 20 social canteens, while the public transport will be free for everyone. He also pledged to renew the urban buses and trolleybuses, to build at least 20 underground and ground parking places, to annually restore by five historical buildings and to plant 1 million trees.
The candidate also intends to constitute a civic council of experts who will assist the mayor and will suggest setting up an inspection and control body to fight corruption at the City Hall, to create 50,000 new jobs, to thermally insulate all the apartment buildings and to build the belt road of Chisinau.
Constantin Codreanu said he will twin Chisinau municipality with seven Romanian municipalities so as to bring Romanian funds to Moldova and will create extensions of the universities of Iasi in Chisinau. He aims to attract investments of €5 billion from Romania and through Romania from EU member states. “During ten years we have witnessed impotently the degradation in Chisinau. The city is in a general crisis and needs a new face. I want to be a mayor who would unite the residents of Chisinau,” stated the aspirant.
The president of honor of PUN Traian Basescu, who served as mayor of Bucharest municipality in 2000-2004, told Constantin Codreanu that the post of mayor is much more challenging than that of minister as the mayor bears direct responsibility for the people. “A mayor is the mayor of everyone, not only of the unionists. The election campaign in Chisinau is firstly about the people and secondly about politics. The people are the first thing that a mayor should bear in mind,” he stated.
Constantin Codreanu hasn’t yet filed the documents needed for being registered as a candidate to the Chisinau District Electoral Council. Asked if the start of the election campaign is legal in such conditions, the Council’s secretary Vitalie Miron said the electoral bodies can impose penalties only on election runners. When a private individual mimics a campaigning process, theses cannot pronounce.
