“The idea of a civil mission is not new, as the demilitarization of the zone of the Transnistrian conflict. However, consensus is needed for transforming the peacekeeping mission. Such a consensus hasn’t been reached yet,” the Deputy Head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova Jan Plešinger has told Info-Prim Neo. “The arguments for or against the transformation of the peacekeeping mission must be dissociated from the human tragedy of January 1,” stressed the official. Jan Plešinger also said that the OSCE Mission to Moldova would like to support the investigation launched on January 2 by cooperation within the Joint Control Commission and would urge all the participants in the talks in the 5+2 format to be sensible. On the first day of the new year, a young man from Pirita was wounded mortally from a gun by a Russian peacekeeper at the trilateral peacekeeping post No. 9 near Vadul lui Voda. He was driving a car, heading for Pirita. There was one passenger in the car. The driver ignored the peacekeepers’ request to stop and displaced the concrete barrier and the traffic sign “Stop”. According to the Reintegration Office, the post’s chief fired several shots in the air and then at the car. A bullet penetrated the young man’s back. He died at the Chisinau Emergency Hospital several hours after the incident.
