Computers for young convicts

The penitentiaries No.4 and 15 from Cricova, No.9 from Pruncul and No.18 from Branesti have been provided with computers as part of the project “Training and Employment of Young People Affected by Drugs, Criminality and HIV/AIDS”, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting the National Council for Coordination of National HIV/AIDS, STDs and TB Prophylaxis and Control Programs. According to Alexandru Curasov, program director at the NGO “Viata Noua” (“New Life”), computer literacy will enable the young convicts to acquire new work skills and to easier find employment when freed. Each of the four institutions now has a room with two tables, two chairs and two computers, where the young detainees will learn to use the computer. The autodidactic training program allows acquiring knowledge without a teacher or specialist in a suitable period of time. A similar computer training program was installed at the Day Center in Chisinau, which is open to the persons from the target group of beneficiaries. In the future, the project will be extended to two more Moldovan penitentiaries. There will be opened artistic handicraft workshops, where those interested will learn modern methods and techniques for painting on glass, working with the wood etc. The idea of preparing the young men in these areas appeared when a number of private companies accepted to employ the young people trained at the Day Center or at the mentioned penitentiaries and entered into cooperation agreements. The project “Training and Employment of Young People Affected by Drugs, Criminality and HIV/AIDS” is financed by the World Bank and implemented by “Viata Noua” NGO.
