The competition for the position of Prosecutor General is to be launched by the end of this week. The announcement has been made by Minister of Justice Olesea Stamate at the presentation of the Cabinet of Ministers’ activity report for 100 days of mandate.

Olesea Stamate has mentioned that, according to the new provisions of the Prosecutor's Office Law, the Prosecutor General is to be elected by the Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP) from a short list of candidates proposed by a commission, made up of experts from the Ministry of Justice. The amendments to the Law of the Prosecutor's Office entered into force on September 21, upon their publication in the Monitorul Official.

Asked by IPN previously, Olesea Stamate stated that, upon the entry into force of the new provisions, the competition commission would be set up and the commission regulation adopted. The Minister of Justice shall order the establishment of the commission. Once the competition is announced, while the file submission period goes on, the commission carries out its internal organization activities.

The position of Prosecutor General remained vacant following the resignation of Eduard Harunjen on July 11. Two days earlier, Parliament found that the conditions for appointing him to the position had not been met.

On August 9, CSP announced a competition, in which seven applicants registered. The competition was cancelled when the new legal provisions became effective.
