The companies that will want to produce seeds for selling them will have to register with the National Agency for Food Safety and to obey the technologies for producing, processing and selling seeds. They will bear responsibility for the quality of the seeds. A bill to this effect was passed by the MPs at the suggestion of the Ministry of Agriculture, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The seeds will be sold in closed and labeled packs. The labels must contain information about their quality, including the phytosanitary state, and a warning if they were treated chemically or biologically.
The seed control body will be able to carry out field inspections to check the seeds and sorts. The persons who will break the law will be held administratively accountable.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the needs of the local agricultural producers are practically satisfied with seeds produced locally. However, there are imported 87% of the sugar beet seeds, 32% of the peas, 30% of the legumes, and 60% of the potatoes for reproduction.
The use of national seeds instead of imported ones will enable to reduce production costs, respectively the amounts of money needed to purchase seeds.
