The community of Armenians in Moldova commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide committed by the Ottoman Empire. On this occasion, the Armenian community wants Turkey to recognize the genocide and to pave thus the way for authentic reconciliation between the Turkish people and the Armenian people. The subject was discussed in a scientific-practical conference staged by the Honorific Consulate of the Republic of Armenia and the Armenian community of Moldova on April 21, IPN reports.
The community’s head Ernest Vardanean said Turkey does not recognize and even vehemently denies the Armenian genocide. “All the Armenians from the world came with the message that we survived and spread to almost all the countries after the genocide and we demand justice and the recognition of the genocide by Turkey and the other countries. We also transmit the message that we represent a talented and intelligent people and promote our cultural, historical and religious values all over the world and respect the country and the land where we live,” he stated.
Doctor of Historical Sciences Eduard Alhazov said the world must comprehend and remember those tragic events as the events against people based on political, religious or other kinds of criteria are forgotten. “These are sad events and if we do not draw conclusions from these events we will not be able to forgive those who committed them and will be unable to go further,” he stated.
Another topic discussed in the event was the Armenian cultural inheritance in Moldova. Tudor Placinta, specialist of the Hancesti Culture and Tourism Division, said that he has been collecting information about the family of the famous Armenian merchant and diplomat Manuc Bei, his Armenian name being Emanuel Myrzaian. He owned a mansion and land in Hancesti. The collected information will be included in a monograph about the history of the family of Manuc Bei.
According to the data presented in the conference, over 1.5 million Armenians lost their lives in the Armenian genocide. On April 24, the Armenians commemorate the deportation and massacre of the Armenians by the Turkish Government in 1915-1916. The community of Armenians in Moldova will hold a service at the Armenian Church “Saint Mother of God” that is located at 8 Piata Veche St.
