Managers of a number of preschool education institutions of Chisinau, as members of the community who are daily responsible for hundreds of children, were trained to give pediatric first aid in situations of risk that can appear in the course of the day. Courses similar to that held at Nursery No. 197 in Ciocana district of Chisinau on December 9 will be staged in a number of national education institutions. These will be attended by educators, assistant educators and even parents. The activities are carried out with the support of the Moldovan-Swish Regionalization of the Pediatric Emergency and Intensive Care Services in the Republic of Moldova Project (REPEMOL), IPN reports.
Within the courses, pediatric specialists familiarize the teaching staff with different situations that can affect children such as object swallowing, blows or other incidents. The steps that the grownups must take were presented on mannequins.
Project manager Silvia Morgoci said it is important for each person to know what should be done when pediatric assistance is needed. Such knowledge is even more important for those who are permanently in contact with children. Similar courses will be organized for educators, assistant educators and parents given that statistics point to high risks of child injury, including at nursery schools.
Silvia Morgoci noted that most probably the project will be extended to schools. It won’t be limited to Chisinau institutions and will be also implemented in districts, especially in communities where the statistics about accidents involving traumas, poisonings and burns are alarming.
Head of the Chisinau General Division of Education, Youth and Sport Tatiana Nagnibeda-Tverdohleb said it is impossible to predict what situations can appear during the day given that the children are very curious, active and energetic. The teachers must know how to act when a child becomes involved in a situation of risk.
The pediatric first aid courses are held under the aegis of a partnership agreement between the Center for Health Policies and Services Moldova, the Chisinau General Division of Education, Youth and Sport and Aqua Trade SRL, which was signed at the beginning of this November. The curriculum used in the courses is based on the Pediatric Basic Life Support curriculum, which was simplified for community members. The curriculum was reviewed by experts of REPEMOL Project.
