Communists will boycott referendum

The Moldovan Party of Communist intends to boycott the upcoming referendum on the way of electing the president, calling on the people not to turn out, Info-Prim Neo reports. The decision was voiced by Communist leader Vladimir Voronin after the party's plenary meeting on Tuesday. He argued that the ruling Alliance for European Integration played unfair when it lowered the turnout requirement to one-third just a week before setting the date of the referendum. Thus, according to Voronin, the decision adopted in the referendum would not be representative enough. On September 5, voters will be asked whether or not they agree to the proposal that the president should be elected through direct popular vote.
