The candidates on behalf of the Party of Communists of Moldova (PCRM) for town and village councilors polled 37.33% of the valid votes, according to the preliminary data from 38% of the polling stations released in the morning of June 4. At the local elections of 2003, PCRM got about 50% of the votes for councilors. The Communists are followed by the “Moldova Noastra” Alliance Party, whose candidates garnered 18.42% of the vote, according to the preliminary results, as against 22% obtained by the Electoral Bloc “ASLMN” in 2003. The Democrat Party obtained 13.67% of the vote, according to the results made public at 8.00. This is by approximately 5% more compared with the previous local elections. The Christian Democrat People’s Party won 9% of the ballot, as a result of the parallel counting of the votes, as opposed to slightly over 5% in the previous elections. Two candidates will compete for the post of Chisinau Mayor in a rerun election, given that no opponent obtained the necessary number of votes. These are Veaceslav Iordan and Dorin Chirtoaca. In Balti, the communist candidate Vasile Panciuc won the election in the first round. According to the preliminary results, about 1.2 million voters took part in the June 3 local elections. The turnout was 50%.
