The Communist parliamentarians describe the Chisinau City Hall's decision to build a waste burning plant as a dubious business practice. Deputy mayor Vlad Cotet says that the accusations form part of the Communists' political game and that the Chisinau residents need this investment project, Info-Prim Neo reports. The agreement to construct the plant was signed with Italy's STR Engineering Consulting SRL on September 16. In a news conference, Communist MP Violeta Ivanov said the project will have a negative impact on the environment and the people's health. “The studies made by European experts show that about 37% of the people living in the vicinity of waste burning plants suffer from cancerous diseases,” said Ivanov, who had been minister of ecology. She also said that the agreement infringes the national legislation and international conventions as the project was not approved by the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of the Environment and other institutions. “I know who wants that the project be implemented and for what purposes,” said another Communist MP Eduard Musuc. But he did not give names. “This document is anti-national,” he added. The European Commission recommended that Moldova should separate the waste as this would enable to save natural resources, the Communist MPs also said. Asked by Info-Prim Neo to comment on the accusations, deputy mayor Vlad Cotet said that the project was approved by all the competent bodies in 2006, when an agreement of intent was signed. The specialists approved of the technology that is to be used. Cotet also said that the plant cannot pollute the air as it will be outfitted with catalyzing systems that do not allow emitting noxious substances. “The project had been postponed since 2006 as the Chisinau Council, where the Communists Party held a majority, did not want to vote on it. Now that it was approved, the Communists play political games.” The plant will be built near the wastewater treatment station. It will occupy 10-15 hectares. The Italian company will invest 190,000 euros in the construction of the plant.
