The Party of Communists has the highest number of women in politics and the party’s administration has always encouraged the women to take part in decision-making, Communist MP Violeta Ivanov stated for IPN when asked to say if she will vote for the bill to institute a gender quota of 40% for party lists in the final reading.
“We are the party with the largest number of women in politics and the party’s leader has always promoted women in politics. I think the women should not be calculated in percentage. Imagine that we have a party called “Moldova’s Women” where 90% of the members will be women. What will we do in such a case?” asked the MP. According to her, her personal opinion is that parties’ lists of candidates should include competent persons, experts in particular areas.
“We supported this legislative initiative. As regards the vote in the final reading, we will discuss the issue inside our parliamentary group and will decide how to act,” stated Violeta Ivanov.
Members of the Platform for Gender Equality on December 17 handed over to MPs a set of information about the necessity of adopting legislative amendments to ensure gender equality. Ecaterina Mardarovici, executive director of the Women’s Political Club 50/50, which is a member of the Platform, said the ensuring of gender equality is a precondition for the sustainable development of society.
