The application lodged by the Alliance for European Integration (AEU) with the Constitutional Court shows that the present administration is concerned about the improvement in the rating of the PCRM, considers the Communist leader Vladimir Voronin. In a press briefing on August 3, the former head of state said he did not intend to run for a third term in the autumn presidential elections, Info-Prim Neo reports. “It is a year since the AEI took over, but the ratings of Voronin and the PCRM go up. Didn’t the head of the parliamentary commission for appointments and immunity Ion Plesca (the author of the challenge to the Constitutional Court – e.n) know that Voronin can no more apply for the office after two consecutive terms? They sought help from the Court out of fear and because they thought that the Court’s decision would demoralize the supporters of the PCRM,” Vladimir Voronin said. He reiterated the PCRM is concerned that Acting President Mihai Ghimpu may refuse to dissolve Parliament after the September 5 constitutional referendum and will call only presidential elections. “If he does so, we will mount mass protests and demand that the legislative body be dissolved,” the Communist leader said. He also said that if elections are held, the PCRM will have a worthy candidate for the President and a good team to form the Government. Asked who will be the Communists Party’s candidate in the presidential elections if Article 78 is modified by referendum, Vladimir Voronin said that his party has enough candidates who are better than those of the AEI. Today, the Constitutional Court ruled that Vladimir Voronin cannot run for a new term in office as President as he held the post for two consecutive terms.
