The communist faction in the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC) accused the majority coalition of incapacity to solve the problems confronting the capital city and left Thursday’s CMC meeting. At the same time, the other councillors deny the accusations and qualify them as an attempt of the communists to block the activity of the city authorities. Svetlana Popa, the leader of the communists in the Council, stated at the opening of the meeting that the faction she represents is deeply worried about what is happening with the local administration and censures the attitude of the newly-formed coalition towards the problems of the city. According to her, the post-election period has been marked by bitter confrontations between the “so-called coalition partners”. Not until the present day has the CMC elected its president and the four deputy mayors, and the districts are still being run by ad-interim representatives. As a consequence, says Svetlana Popa, the city is full of garbage, some streets lack power supply, and because of the mayor and the City Council, the resumption of hot water supply was delayed for about two weeks. The coalition is only pretending to be working, and under these circumstances the communist faction refuses to participate in such games, Popa said. Because the Council didn’t include the issues regarding the election of the CMC president and of the deputy mayors in the order of the day, the communist faction requested a break of up to two weeks, to give the coalition partners some time to settle their issues. Referring to the accusations brought, the councillor of the Moldova Noastra Alliance, Oleg Cernei stated that the communist councillors are just waiving the responsibilities they have in front of the voters. The reasons set forth are ungrounded, said Cernei. The City Hall and the municipal services are able to cope with the existent problems. But the communist faction just follows the order of President Vladimir Voronin who said that he will give no money to the municipality, and the real reason is to block the activity of the CMC and of the newly-elected mayor of Chisinau, Cernei concluded. The leader of the social-democrat faction, Eduard Musuc was also against the adjournment, saying that too much time has been lost already after the local elections. He said that these delays compromise the changes for the better promised during the election campaign. Musuc called for constructive attitude and responsibility towards the citizens. After the communist faction left the meeting, the remaining councillors approved the order of the day, which included issues concerning the heat and water suppliers, as well as the allocation of funds for paying the debt owed to the heat supplier and for building an apartment house for the Transnistrian refugees.
