The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe (CoE) will discuss the execution of judgments of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), including on Moldova. Thus, the Committee of Ministers will hold the second of the six special meetings foreseen in 2006 for the supervision of the execution of the ECHR judgments in Strasbourg on March 28 and 29, according to a communication of CoE.
In particular, the Committee of Ministers will supervise the payment by respondent states of just satisfaction to applicants, the adoption of other individual measures granting the applicants the appropriate redress, general measures to prevent new violations similar to those found in the judgments.
The Ilascu and others v. Russia & Moldova judgment is part of cases included in the agenda of the Committee of Ministers. The ECHR found the applicants' detention in the "Moldavian Republic of Transnistria" to be arbitrary and unlawful and ordered the immediate release of the applicants still in detention, following the adoption of the 3rd Interim Resolution ResDH(2006) 11 on March 1, 2006.
Another issue on the working agenda envisages the revision of measures adopted or under way for the protection of journalists in Moldova on basis of the case Julieta Savitchi vs Moldova.
The ECHR has sentenced Moldova for violating the rights of its citizens in 26 cases until now.
