The closer the Eastern Partnership Summit that will take place in Vilnius on November 29, the greater will be the pressure exerted on Moldova from outside, Deputy Head of Parliament Andrian Candu said in the public debate “Post-scriptum: What should Moldovan society know and do over the ‘bothering ’ statements about the Republic of Moldova made by foreign officials?” that was staged by IPN News Agency.|

“I said not only once that different kinds of pressure will appear before the Vilnius Summit. We discussed the issue within the government coalition, in Parliament and with society. We must take into account the context and what happens at regional and global levels. Russia pursues its own goals and will make effort to keep Moldova within its sphere of influence. Studies show that Moldova is at a crossroads between the East and the West and there are both advantages and disadvantages here,” he stated.

Andrian Candu considers that the Moldovan politicians must have a culture and messages that will contribute to building, not destroying. “Russia is an important partner, but it is we who must formulate positive messages. We must have tolerant and wise messages. These events also have a positive effect on the country. Every time such crises appear, society manages to react in unison. The businesses direct their products to other markets. I was proud when I saw that the young people made common cause on the social networking sites and urged those from the diaspora to drink Moldovan wine and to eat national products. We must draw some conclusions and go on,” said the politician, referring to Russia’s embargo on imports of Moldovan wine and brandy.

In the debate it was said that certain fissures appeared inside the government coalition. Andrian Candu said he is optimist, while the fissures are something normal as the coalition is a living thing, with different parties and different doctrines. “The parties of the government coalition have a goal that unites them – the county’s further development. The fissures exist, but there are also discussions. The subjects are discussed by the coalition’s executive bodies and they suggest solutions,” said the Deputy Speaker.

Andrian Candu also said they want to strengthen society and the political class, but sometimes some of the people put politics above the society’s interests. “We must be wise and treat the statements and the pressure with tolerance. We must not have aggressive reactions. The politicians, society and the mass media should draw consecutions from such shocks and messages. We must be very attentive when we react. There are much larger and more developed countries like Moldova that react calmly,” he stated.

The public debate “Post-scriptum: What should Moldovan society know and do over the ‘bothering’ statements about the Republic of Moldova made by foreign officials?” is the 21st of the series “Development of political culture by public debates”. The project is supported by the German foundation Hanns Seidel.
