The campaign to collect signatures for switching over to a presidential republic begins next week. President Igor Dodon said a decision to this effect was taken in the meeting of the National Council of the Party of Socialists (PSRM) in which he also took part, IPN reports.

“The authorities barred the organization of a consultative referendum, but we will hold this referendum in each community of the country, on each street, in each yard and home. Together with the colleagues from the PSRM, we decided to launch the nationwide campaign to collect signatures for switching over to a presidential republic on October 16 this year,” said Igor Dodon.

The switchover to the presidential system is one of the demands put forward by the participants in the protest mounted by the PSRM on September 24, when the consultative referendum initiated by the President was to take place. The presidential decree on the plebiscite was declared unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court.

President Dodon said the National Council of the PSRM discussed the measures that will be taken to unblock the dozens of initiatives proposed by the Head of State for solving social problems and the thwarting of the President in his efforts to strengthen the strategic partnership with the Russian Federation and to establish new directions in the Moldovan-Russian cooperation.
