Coalitions in local councils between representatives of different parties are possible and will be formed much easier than at central level. Such opinions were stated in the talk show “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.

Journalist Ion Terguta considers alliances are possible because the councilors know each other better at local level. “In villages, the people form alliances because they know each other, not because of their political principles. In village councils, the alliances formed based on party principles can fail at the initial stage. I don’t think that all those who ran on the list of Renato Usatyi’s party share exactly the same ideas as the party’s leader,” he stated.

Victor Juc, vice director of the Institute of Legal and Political Research of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, considers coalitions that are impossible at central level can be formed at local level. “Coalitions between Liberals and Communists or between Socialists and Liberal-Democrats can appear in the local councils at a time when the leaders of these parties exclude such alliances between them,” he said.

Alexandru Cauia, dean of the Faculty of Law of the Moldova Free International University, said it is now important to form a coalition in the Chisinau Municipal Council. “The Liberal Party’s initiative to form a majority coalition in the Chisinau Council is a well-thought-out move. A coalition must be formed in Chisinau,” he stated.

Media analyst Cristian Tabara expressed his fears about the successful formation of a coalition between the pro-European parties that won seats in the Chisinau Municipal Council given that the issue is rather thorny.

In the June 14 local elections, the Party of Socialists won 19 seats in the Chisinau Municipal Council, the Liberal Party – 17, the Electoral Bloc “European People’s Platform of Moldova” - 6, the Party of Communists – 3, the Liberal Democratic Party - 2, while the Democratic Party - 1. At least 26 seats are needed for forming a majority coalition in the Council.
