The National Social Insurance Agency CNAS applies social security agreements with 16 states based on the principle of proportionality. In 2023, 340 social benefits were awarded under those agreements.

The agreements in effect are with Romania, Portugal, Bulgaria, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Austria, Estonia, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Belgium, Lithuania, Germany, Turkey, Belarus, Greece, and Italy. Starting on June 1, the agreement with Spain, signed in July 2022, will also take effect.

Most social benefits awarded under the 16 agreements in 2023 were old-age pensions, more than 290. Around 40 disability pensions and 7 survivors’ pensions were also awarded.

People who have reached retirement age and have completed a contribution period both in the Republic of Moldova and abroad can benefit from the totalization of the contribution period in both countries. In Moldova, potential beneficiaries must apply to the CNAS headquarters, and abroad to the competent institutions for establishing the pension and other social benefits at the place of residence. Once a year, the pension recipient will have to appear in person at the CNAS or submit a proof of life certificate. Otherwise, the pension may be suspended.
