The Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC) on June 18 unanimously approved a draft decision to transfer about one hectare of land stated in Ciocana district, through which the Ungheni-Chisinau gas pipeline will go, under public ownership, IPN reports.

The owners of the land that will become municipal property will be paid compensation.

“We hope this vote will be for the benefit of the citizens. This pipeline is long awaited. The Russian monopoly should be diluted. I hope this will also have an impact on tariffs as they affect people’s pockets,” stated Liberal councilor Ion Cebanu.

“We support this project as it will provide the inhabitants with an alternative source of gas and this is for everyone’s benefit,” said unaffiliated councilor Vasile Chirtoca.

The gas pipeline is built by the Romanian company Transgaz, which privatized Vestmoldtransgaz. According to Transgaz director general Ion Sterian, the extension of the Iasi-Ungheni-Chisinau gas pipeline on the territory of Moldova will enable this to import gas from Romania, the Black Sea and northern Greece.
