Ukrainian Ambassador to Moldova Serhii Pyrozhkov said the Giurgiulesti Port does not pose an ecological danger for the Danube and a decision about the possible closure of the port cannot be taken by the authorities of Odessa, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The Odessa councilors’ request to close the port is unfounded. Even if the Giurgiulesti Port is in competition with the Ukrainian ports situated in the region, we realize its importance for Moldova and do not intend to hinder its development,” said the Ukrainian diplomat. Several weeks ago, the Party of Regions’ representatives on the Odessa Regional Council demanded that Moldova’s Giurgiulesti Port be closed. According to them, the terminal exploitation and construction norms have not been observed and there is a great risk that the environment will be polluted as oil products may flow into the Danube. The councilors said they will inform the President of Ukraine Victor Yanukovich of the issue and will warn him about a possible ecological catastrophe. The land on which the Giurgiulesti Port is situated was ceded by Ukraine to Moldova in exchange for a section of the Odessa-Reni road going near Palanca village.
