Experts expressed differing opinions about the resignation of Chiril Gaburici from the post of Prime Minister, but all of them said they are skeptical about the continuation of reforms in Moldova. The issue was discussed in the talk show “Expertise hour” on Jurnal TV channel, IPN reports.

Director of the Resource Center for Human Rights (CReDO) Sergiu Ostaf described Gaburici’s gesture as an irresponsible and non-calculated one. “The leaving of any high-ranking post leads to instability. The fact that the resignation was tendered right before the local elections is to the detriment of the public interests,” stated Ostaf. As to the possibility of naming Dorin Chirtoaca as Prime Minister, the CReDO director said such a possibility exists, but it’s not known if Chirtoaca is able to cope with the difficulties faced by the country.

Political analyst Alexei Tulbure, former ambassador to the UN, considers that by his resignation, Gaburici tried to improve his image. It may also be a stratagem aimed at distracting attention from the more serious problems. “He should have resigned earlier, when the first information that his diploma was forged appeared. After he assumed responsibility for the budget and signed secret decisions to additionally allocate billions of lei from the National Bank’s reserves, Gaburici says that the system is under siege after he himself took part in this siege. This resignation raises questions, especially because the Premier recently issued an ultimatum saying he will resign at the start of July. Such a gesture could have been made to distract attention from something that is going to happen, like the stealing of other billions from the banking system and the rigging of elections,” he stated.

The leader of the Centrist Union Mihai Petrache said Gaburici’s resignation was a consequence of his questioning at the Prosecutor General’s Office on June 11. “Gaburici didn’t realize what burden he assumed. He didn’t have another way out when he was presented the evidence. I don’t think this is an honorable dismissal,” he stated.

Prime Minister Chiril Gaburici announced his resignation in a press briefing on June 12. He said that the people are equal before the law and there is one justice for all and he considers that a Prime Minister, as any citizen, must support an objective inquiry and must benefit from such an inquiry. “I feel sorry that the subject about the presence or absence of a diploma started to acquire different connotations and is used in different political games,” stated Chiril Gaburici, noting he hopes there will be now no more speculations about the correctness and transparency of the investigation. He also said that real reforms are not possible as long as he does not enjoy the support of the parliamentary majority and of the opposition. He called on the parliamentary parties to form a new government coalition.
