The Central Election Commission (CEC) is asked to endorse the draft regulations concerning the accessibility of the electoral process. The public call was made by the Civic Coalition for Free and Fair Elections, Keystone Human Services International Moldova and a number of civil society organizations (SCOs) active in the area of disability, IPN reports.
The draft regulations contain provisions regarding the physical and informational accessibility of the electoral process and voting procedures and instruments for persons with disabilities. They were worked out by a common working group consisting of representatives of the CEC and SCOs active in the area of disability.
The organizations say that Moldova’s legislation guarantees electoral rights for persons with disabilities, not yet the possibility of benefiting from them. Therefore, these regulations are a mechanism that can ensure access to free and fair elections in equal conditions for disabled persons.
Civil society notes that the draft regulations were to be debated publicly and approved by the CEC before the November 30 legislative elections and warns that the delay in the process will continue to infringe the electoral rights of the persons with disabilities living in Moldova.
The public call was made by the Civic Coalition for Free and Fair Elections, Keystone Human Services International Moldova, the Legal Aid Center for Persons with Disabilities, “Motivatie” Association of Moldova, and the Moldova Institute for Human Rights (IDOM).
