Civil society calls on MPs to take a nominal vote on the bill concerning the financing of political parties, which was included in the July 16 sitting of Parliament. The NGOs mounted a protest before the Parliament Building, entitled “Countdown to fulfillment of the Government’s promises. Three days left!”, IPN reports.
National Participation Council chairman Sergiu Ostaf said that society must see who wants the financing of political parties to be made transparent and who will vote against.
If this bill is passed, the electoral authorities will be able to control the spending of parties and candidates in elections.
Executive director of the Partnership for Development Center Alexei Buzu said that Parliament must immediately adopt the law providing for the introduction of a minimum women’s and men’s representation quota for the lists of candidates. “This bill is important because we are close to an election campaign. If it’s not passed in the current session of Parliament, the women will be again underrepresented in the campaign,” he stated.
“The average women’s representation rate in Moldova is much lower than the European average. We must have active measures to make sure that the women are appropriately represented in Parliament.”
The campaign “Countdown to fulfillment of the Government’s promises” was launched on July 7. Also then, the NGOs initiated protests in front of the Government and Parliament Buildings, calling upon the ruling parties to honor the undertaken commitments.
