The Civil Aviation Authority has been created in Moldova to replace the State Administration for Civil Aviation, in line with the recently initialed EU-Moldova Common Aviation Area Agreement, the Ministry of Transportation said in a press release. The Civil Aviation Authority has the status of a specialized central public authority and is invested with certification, supervision and control functions in the area of civil aviation. The institutional reform in the area of civil aviation started in July 2008 with the creation of the Transportation Agency, the Ministry recalls. The major objective of the reform is to create a competent body with the capacity to implement into practice 70 European Directives and 40 other additional regulations required to harmonize Moldova's legislation to the European aviation safety and security standards. According to the Ministry, the reform will stimulate fair competition on the aviation market and will help to improve quality of services, which will increase the number of passengers and, more importantly, will create conditions for lower airfares.
