In a recent interview for BBC radio station, President Vladimir Voronin declared that there are no language problems in the Republic of Moldova at the moment, but the citizens that do not know Moldovan should learn it. At the question why the Russian language wasn’t given the status of state language, as the communist party promised in 2001, Voronin replied that 22% of the population Moldova are not Moldovans and the Russian language is the language of communication between these ethnic groups, so in fact, given its usage, Russian is in fact a state language. “Russian hasn’t lost anything in the Republic of Moldova in the past few years. Documents are still performed in 2 languages, no schools for Russian speaking children were closed, there are no employment problems for Russian speaking persons etc.” the head of state declared, and also specified that there are even 4 ministers that do not speak the state language. Voronin also mentioned that the persons that don’t know Moldovan should learn it. He specified that he doesn’t mean the aged, but the young that must know the language of the country they live in. 17 years will pass on August 31 since Romanian was proclaimed as state language.
