A group of architects and the Agency for Monument Inspection and Restoration formulated a concept for the restoration of the Public Garden “Stephan the Great” of Chisinau. In a news conference at IPN, the authors called on the citizens of the capital city and business entities to support this project that is to be implemented in 2019.

The Agency’s director Ion Ștefăniță said that by this project they want to revitalize the Central Park of Chisinau taking into account the initial project. There will be restored the central fountain that will be lit artistically at night and built two more fountains. A contest to decide the design of the urban furniture in the park, the benches, garbage bins and other elements will be soon launched.

Architect Elena Țînțari said the park went through a number of transformations in time. The intervention of the 1960s-1970s affected the park’s appearance. The symmetry was compromised by unjustifiably authorizing new alleys and paths. A part of the cast iron fence was destroyed, as was the fountain. Elements of the lighting system of a historical value were partially kept, but these are insufficient and should be supplemented. The stairs and entrances to the park should be restored. The pavement slabs should be replaced with light slabs that would contrast with the green color of the lawn and with dark architectural elements.

Architect Natalia Vintilova said playgrounds, a tennis court and other recreational areas will be set up in the park. The green area of the park will be extended by 5,000 square meters, from 42,000 to 47,000.

The Public Garden “Stephan the Great” was founded in 1818, being renovated for several times. In 1958, there was laid out the Alley of Classical Writers. In the park, there are over 50 species of trees. A part of them are over 100 years old.
