Representatives of the Citizens’ Group for the Reunification of the Country consider that the national constitutional referendum of October 20 will not be validated and the law put up for the referendum will not be adopted. They say that for the law to be adopted, it is necessary for 1.65 million citizens to vote “YES”. But this seems impossible given that 1.4-1.6 million voters participated in the last national elections and the options were divided.

“Open the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova and see Article 142, paragraph 1, which tells us quite clearly – if constitutional laws on sovereignty, neutrality, integrity are proposed in a referendum, they can be adopted only by 50%+1 of all those put on electoral rolls,” associate professor Andrei Groza told a news conference held at IPN.

He noted that, according to the Central Election Commission, the electoral registers include 3.3 million people. Respectively, for the constitutional law to be adopted, 1.65 million voters must say “YES”. “Knowing how many people voted in the 2020 presidential election and the 2021 parliamentary elections – 1.4 million and 1.6 million... And those votes were practically divided into two. Now, obviously, given that about 1.65 million must say “YES”, it is not real at all to have so many participants, all with the “YES” option,” stated Andrei Groza.

In his opinion, this is an essential aspect that everyone must know. “From the beginning, it is clear that the referendum will not be validated and the law will not be adopted. Everyone must know this because there is a reasonable suspicion that the government will try to falsify, will try to violate the Constitution so that this law is passed. Why? Because they pursue interests,” stated Andrei Groza.

Representatives of the Citizens’ Group for the Reunification of the Country addressed an open letter to President Maia Sandu, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, Constitutional Court president Domnica Manole, European Union Ambassador Janis Mazeiks and Ambassador of Romania Cristian-Leon Țurcanu.

“In this situation, but also in the situation when the “pro-European separatists/current rulers have proven that their personal interests prevail over national interests and even over international law (they do not want to return the Romanian territory conquered by the Soviet army/Russian army on June 28, 1940 to Romania), we are sure that, after finding out the results of the referendum, they will try to falsify them even by violating the Constitution. In these circumstances, we request you to monitor the situation and, if necessary, to intervene in order to put an end to the possible violation of the Constitution. We are sure that the European Union will not accept such a possible way of integrating the Republic of Moldova into the European Community of free and fair nations,” reads the letter of the Citizens’ Group for the Reunification of the Country.
