Citizens born in 1947 can request the indexation of their savings till July 31

The depositors of the former Sberbank of USSR, born before 1947, can request the indexation of their savings with the Banca de Economii till the end of July. At present savings can be withdrawn by the depositors born before 1943, who submitted applications till March 31, 2007, Banca de Economii said. At the first stage, depositors receive one thousand lei, according to the proportion 1 leu to 1 soviet rouble. The rest of the amounts will be indexed based on the proportion 1: 2.5, but only after all the depositors who had accounts with the Sberbank until 1992 withdraw the first thousand of rouble indexed. In 2006, the bank indexed the savings of the citizens born before 1940, with 65 mln lei (about $5 mln) being reserved for this purpose. The Budget Law for 2007 earmarks 85 million lei ($6.5 mln) for the indexation of savings. The required amount for the indexation of all the savings in roubles with the Banca de Economii exceeds 1.7 billion lei ($136.3 mln). At the beginning of 1992, the bank had 1.98 million deposit accounts totalling 4.13 billion roubles. In 2003-2006, the bank depositors born before 1940 received 193.8 million lei.
