Citizens born before 1954 can file applications for having their deposits indexed

The depositors of the Savings Bank born before 1954 inclusively can lodge applications for having their deposits indexed at the first stage by May 1, 2008, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Government extended the March 1 deadline at its meeting on February 13. The Ministry of Finance said that if the deadline is not extended, there will be spent only 56% of the 85 million lei planned in the state budget for this. A sum of 13.7 million lei will be paid to the depositors that filed applications for indexation, but did not receive the money during 2003-2007 for different reasons. At the first stage, the depositors receive by 1,000 lei according to the ratio 1 lei:1 Soviet rubble. The rest of the sums will be paid according to the ratio 1 lei:2.5 Soviet rubbles, but only after all the depositors that had accounts in the Soviet Sberbank until 1992 take the first 1,000 rubbles indexed. After the Moldovan leu entered circulation on November 29, 1993 and following the liberalisation of prices, the population’s deposits decreased in value over 1,000 times.
