Cigarette smuggling group annihilated

The police hunted down a group smuggling cigarettes from the Transnistrian region for selling them in Romania. Recently, the group intended to take over 81,000 packs of cigarettes out of the country, IPN reports.

According to the Chisinau Police Division, the smugglers were caught on the left bank of the Prut, near Medeleni village of Ungheni district, on the night of May 19. Simultaneously, 14 searches were carried out at the homes, storehouses and vehicles of suspects in different settlements of Ungheni district and in the municipality of Chisinau. There were seized cigarettes, pneumatic boats, units of transport, a gun and other objects.

Six persons were arrested, including the organizers, accomplices and the authors of the offense. There were confiscated over 164,000 packs of cigarettes assessed at about 1 million lei, three minibuses used to commit the offense and over €50,000 that was allegedly earned from smuggling.

The prosecutors examining the case will provide additional information about the investigation.
