Five men, including a Romanian national, have been arrested on the charge of smuggling tobacco products in exceptionally large amounts.
The police said the Romanian citizen had the role of organizing the transit of the contraband across the Prut River. He would then allegedly market the cigarettes and send part of the returns to his Moldovan partners so that they could buy the next parcel.
The investigation found that the arrested men could be involved in other cases of smuggling reported in March, June and July, when Moldova-labeled cigarettes were found on their way across the Prut. The suspects were arrested for 30 days. If found guilty, they could spend from 3 to 10 years in jail.
