The Christmas tree that is to be inaugurated today, December 1, in the Great National Assembly Square of Chisinau, hasn’t yet reached the capital city. The Chisinau City Hall keeps silent and does not provide details as to the delay and when the winter holidays will be inaugurated.
Contacted by IPN, head of the City Hall’s Public Relations Division Vadim Branzaniuc said related details will be made public later.
The fir tree was bought for over 15,000 lei in the Ukrainian region Ivano-Frankivsk and is about 29 meters in height. Under an order signed by acting mayor general of Chisinau Silvia Radu, the competent municipal services were to decorate the tree by November 30 so that it could be inaugurated on December 1, expectably at 5:30pm.
As regards the Christmas tree, suspended mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca said it is impossible for the fir tree to have cost only 15,000 lei, given the transportation expenses. “The related costs total thousands of euros or even tens of thousands of euros,” he estimated. “The atmosphere of holidays is not measured in meters.”
Last year, the fir tree placed in the central square of Chisinau was purchased from a family from Ialoveni. This cost 15,000 lei and was paid by a businessman. Two years ago, the municipality adorned one of the fir trees growing near the Triumphal Arch.
