Pies, mulled wine, handicrafts, recreational areas for children and different accessories for the winter holidays can be all found at the Christmas Market on 31 August St in Chisinau that was inaugurated on December 15. This is entitled “Home on Christmas”. In the inaugural ceremony, inhabitants and guests of the capital city could listen to carols and songs sung by the bands “Fluieras” and “Etno Republic”. There were also turned on the holiday lights on the fir tree brought from the Romanian Carpathian Mountains, IPN reports.

Prime Minister Pavel Filip said in the inauguration that the Christmas Market was entitled “Home on Christmas” because each of us feels best at home and feels the real warmth of the winter holidays at home, while the multitude of planned events will bring old and young together, including the Moldovans abroad. The Government pursues the objective of integrating Moldova into the EU and the market was thus set up in a European style so as to bring Europe closer. “This means celebrating Christmas at home in the same way as the big European cities celebrate Christmas. At home we are together with the beloved ones, the family,” stated the Premier.

Pavel Filip also said it is important for all the citizens of the Republic of Moldova to be able to enjoy the winter holidays, regardless of the daily problems. “I learned this from my parents. They took care for us, the seven children, to feel happy on Christmas even when the situation in the family was difficult,” he stated. Thus, over 4,000 children from all over the country, including the Transnistrian region, will be able to visit the market and the Government will cover the associated costs.

Thus, until January 14, 2018, the children will be able to talk to Santa Claus in the vicinity of the fir tree, to skate on the open-air skating rink or to ride on the 72-seat carousel that was brought from Ukraine. Almost 20 small houses were built on the section of 31 August St between the streets Banulescu-Bodoni and Pushkin. These sell things typical of the winter holidays.
