People’s Christian Democrat Faction (PPCD) from the Chisinau Municipal Council is against depositing the mud from Valea Morilor Lake along Vasile Lupu Street, as it is planned in a project of the local authorities.
The councilor from PPCD faction, Eugenia Starcea declared that both ecologists and the experts of the Preventive Medicine Center, Public Associations, as well as the ordinary citizens consider that depositing the mud in the center of the city will become a source of infections and of unpleasant smell. According to the councilor, CMC must examine the possibility of depositing the mud on a land outside the city, and its subsequent drying and selling abroad. “There are many countries which solicit and would accept buying this mud which is a very good fertilizer”, Starcea said.
The City Hall of the municipality of Chisinau and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources (MENR) recently declared that in order to clean the lake from mud, the variant of evacuating water was chosen. This variant was considered the most efficient and the most ecologically clean, so that after the extraction of the mud, estimated at 2 mln cubic meters (about 2 meters all over the lake), it will be possible to place broken stones and granite on the ground of the lake. As well, it will be possible to strengthen the banks and to drain rivers through this method.
Authorities plan to start the water pumping mud extraction works this autumn.
The interim Mayor of Chisinau, Vasile Ursu declared that these actions aim at transforming Valea Morilor Park into a zone, where citizens can rest and swim without the risk of getting sick. These actions were especially justified by the ecological catastrophe of this summer, when because of the excessive mud, tons of fish living in the lake died.
