The level of sanitation in Chisinau’s localities is poor because of defect water cleaning plants and poor sewage network, specialists from the Municipal Center of Preventive Medicine (MCPM) say.
Hygienists insist that each year during the intensive sanitation season roughly 50 unauthorized refuse spots are being discovered, and the situation is persistent. The refuse spots affect severely the quality of groundwater, which eventually reach wells and springs, Tudor Puiu, department chief at MCPM told suburban officials during a seminar.
Another problem related to hygiene the suburbs confront with is the failing water purification plants. According to Puiu, the plants from Bacioi, Budesti and Ciorescu villages are out of order and the waste water coming from apartment blocks, companies and organizations is being pumped off in ponds used for swimming in the hot season.
Doctors criticize this unchanged state of affairs, despite petitions forwarded to suburban mayoralties. As a result, the ponds and lakes nearby these villages are infected with pathogen vibrios and bacilli, endangering human health, including a vibrio resembling to cholera.
At the same time the suburbs’ sanitation condition is worsened by the lack of sewage networks. Tudor Puiu said that expanding water pipes should go hand in hand with building sewage networks. Mayors must bear in mind that throwing wastes on the soil causes polluted groundwater and inferior agricultural goods harvested by the local farms.
Recently, MCPM advised once again mayors to disinfect the localities’ wells and eliminate unauthorized waste spots.
