“The Romanian-French Theoretical Lyceum Gheorghe Asachi” writes the renewed signboard on the frontage of the oldest school in Chisinau. This reinstates the 'Romanian' tag in the lyceum's name, after it was replaced with the word 'Moldovan' in 2006, despite strong opposition from both the students and the teachers, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The new signboard was installed on January 6, during the winter vacation, and the students were surprised to see it when they came back to classes on Monday.
Language tags were appended by ministerial ordinance to the names of schools, in particular lyceums, in the early nineties, to highlight the first and the second languages taught in a particular school.
So far, the Romanian-French Lyceum G. Asachi is the only school that restored its old name.
On 4 May 2006, the students at Asachi vehemently protested the change to the “Moldovan-French” phrase, tearing down the modified inscription, which had been installed during the Easter vacation. The protest was supported by the teachers, who disrupted classes and joined the demonstrators.
Soon after that, four Asachi students were summoned to appear before police investigators in connection with the protests, on charges of group hooliganism.
