The works to rehabilitate the wastewater treatment station in the municipality of Chisinau were 70% executed and are to be completed in November 2021. The data were presented in public hearings on the issue held by the Parliament’s commission on environment and regional development, IPN reports.

Deputy mayor of Chisinau Ilie Ceban said the unpleasant smell at the wastewater treatment station is caused by the 500,000 tonnes of mud that are stored in the open air. With the money provided by the National Ecological Fund, a special cover was bought and this was placed over the mud. The unpleasant smell was this way reduced. But the station daily produces another 100 tonnes of mud.

He noted that 14 companies presented different solutions for getting rid of the smell and one of them is to set up pyrolysis installations that daily transform up to 10 tonnes of mud into dust. The price of such an installation is of about €5 million and the money could be provided by the National Ecological Fund. If the problem is not solved, an ecological catastrophe could be witnessed and this could turn national.

MP Inga Grigoriu, a member of the commission, said the project to rehabilitate the wastewater treatment station was initiated in 2019, but wasn’t completed even if there were enough financial resources for the purpose. On the other hand, Anatolie Likiii, acting director general of “Apă-Canal Chisinau”, said the works were delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The project to rehabilitate the wastewater treatment station in Chisinau is implemented in the framework of a program financed by the EBRD and EIB and with an investment grant provided by the EU’s Neighborhood Investment Facility under the guarantee of the Chisinau City Hall.
