The greenhouse gas emissions are a subject of global importance. These decreased against the background of COVID-19. However, green economies and decarbonization remain two strategic challenges, especially together with the overcoming of the pandemic. In an event in Chisinau centering on Moldova’s course to COP26 – Conference of the Parties – that brings together the countries that signed the Paris Agreement, Italy’s Ambassador to Moldova Lorenzo Tomassoni said the meeting set to take place in Glasgow this November will be a platform for sharing and implementing the objectives of the agreement: limiting global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, IPN reports.
“The ambition is the main driving force of Italy in its partnership with the UK for COP26. The commitment is to achieve climate neutrality by 2054. We feel very encouraged by the involvement of many local leaders and also by the results achieved by different nations. The Republic of Moldova also reduced successfully the greenhouse gas emissions. I want to congratulate you on what has been done until now and on the long-term commitments and plans,” stated Lorenzo Tomassoni.
He noted that in partnership with the UK, Italy will host pre-COP26 at the end of September - the start of October and about 200 persons there will be able to discuss ideas and address the main issues that will be broadly discussed at COP26.
“Italy will be making effort, together with the friends from the UK, including within the presidency of C20. We will have two meetings of ministers, one on environment and another one on climate and energy, during July 22-23 this year. We hope to contrite to the diplomat preparations for COP26,” stated Lorenzo Tomassoni.
Brutish Ambassador to Moldova Steven Fisher said that Glasgow in November will play host to specialists in environment and climate, representatives of environmental organizations, etc. “Besides the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the climatic hazards we are facing are a problem for our generation and also for the future generations. The UK, together with the partners from Italy, is very proud to host this event that will definitely be one of the largest conferences,” stated.
Attending the event, Minister of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Ion Perju said climate change endangers the sustainable development of mankind, forcing the nation to take action aimed at reducing the intensity of this process and at alleviating the negative consequences. Until 2030, the Republic of Moldova set the goal of unconditionally reducing the greenhouse gas emissions by 70%, to under the level of 1990. “We intend to work with the international community in the alleviation and adjustment to climate change,” noted the minister.
The Conference of the Parties, known as COP27, brings together 197 countries annually as signatories of the CONUSC. Since the Paris Agreement of 2015, annual COPs have become the most relevant and representative climate forums, offering a global barometer of progress towards meeting the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
