The first intersections in Chisinau will start to be monitored by video cameras from September. Video cameras will be installed in another 41 intersections by this yearend, Prime Minister Iurie Leanca and Minister of the Interior Dorin Recean announced after the meeting of the National Road Safety Council, IPN reports.
Iurie Leanca told the journalists that they analyzed the statistical data and saw improvements. The number of road accidents in the first six months of this year fell by 8%, while the number of deaths claimed by accidents decreased by 30% compared with the corresponding period last year.
“The reforms initiated by the Ministry of the Interior started to produce results. But the tragedies show that there is yet a lot of work to be done. The police will carry out prophylaxis measures where they are less expected. The street markings must be done with modern technology so that they do not disappear after the first rain. There will be set up more speed limit signs near schools. We want to carry out more information campaigns as the people must know the risks,” sated the Premier.
He is convinced that the legal age and the hours at which alcohol can be sold are not always respected. He demanded that the police monitor the situation so that alcohol is not sold to minors. The video monitoring network may be extended to cover all the country, most probably under a public-private partnership.
Dorin Recean said the operations to verify the drivers at night and the sale of alcoholic beverages outside the allowed hours, especially to minors, were extended. As to the video monitoring, he said that the optic fiber was installed in the first monitored intersections. All the monitoring equipment is in Chisinau and the works will be completed by the end of the year.
The officials will meet again in a month or two to see what was done. They will also consider the possibility of including a traffic education course in schools.
