Chisinau-Soroca national road to be rehabilitated by June

The Ministry of Transport has announced a new term for rehabilitating two sections of the national road M2 Chisinau-Soroca. Under the initial contract, the works were to be completed by December 15, 2012. The new deadline is this June, Info-Prim Neo reports. In a news conference on January 22, Gian Luigi Savorani, engineer of the company Toto Costruzioni Generali that is performing the works, said that the repair works were delayed owing to the worsening of the road system in 2012. “The quantity of asphalt for the equaling layer will be increased,” he stated. According to the Deputy Minister of Transport Boris Gherasim, the contractor received four warnings for the delay and the quality of the works. The financing was stopped and there were imposed penalties. If the works are not finished by the new deadline, the contract will be terminated. The works on the first section of 28.3 km were 60% executed, while on the second section of 15.3 km – 91%. Almost €9 million has been invested so far. The program to rehabilitate the two road sections forms part of the road rehabilitation strategy that is implemented with financing from the EBRD and EIB.
