Soon the drinking water supplied in the capital will not be treated with chlorine, as the provider Apa-Canal Chisinau (ACC) develops a project on changing the water disinfectant, Info-Prim Neo reports. ACC’s director, Constantin Becciev, told the Chisinau Municipal Council’s sitting on March 25 that his company was considering to use hypochlorite of sodium instead. They aim to diminish the level of the concentration of the chlorine in water and to prevent possible emergencies generated by chlorine gas emissions. Constantin Becciev said it was not necessary to install filters to better the quality of the running water. “ACC supplies qualitative water,” he said. According to him, the local standard of the water quality dates back to Soviet times and is more severe than most of the parameters required in Western countries. Asked by a councilor to explain the complaints of residents from Ialoveni town that the water is milky and the clothes get dirty after being washed, Constatnin Becciev said the pipes were very old and rusty. The solution is to change them, but now Apa-Canal Chisinau hardly covers the running costs and cannot make any investments. However, the ACC director says the company has repaired 250 km of pipes of those 1,600 km for the last five years.
