The Chisinau City Hall has issued a press release to assure people who choose to recycle their waste that the process does work and to encourage them to continue doing so.
“The residents of the capital who dispose of their waste responsibly by discarding it in the corresponding containers, without contaminating it with organic matter, can rest assured that it is duly processed and recycled”, says the press release.
There are about 1,500 green, yellow and blue containers around the city collecting glass, plastics and papers, respectively.
The recyclable waste put in the colored containers, i.e. sorted at the source, is taken free of charge by the municipal sanitation company to a sorting facility and then to the respective processing companies for recycling.
Some of the waste that is not sorted at the source is sorted manually by the municipal sanitation company. The garbage that can not be recycled is taken to the Țânțăreni landfill.
The City Hall has launched the “Chisinau Solid Waste” Project that aims to reduce the rate of generated municipal waste through good sorting and recycling practices. The project is part of the EBRD’s Green Cities urban sustainability program.
