Mayor General of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca could remain without his driver’s license for a year after he caused a traffic accident in the morning of January 10. Officers of the Chisinau Traffic Police investigated the case immediately and said the mayor was guilty. They were instructed to broadly report on the case and provide details.
According to sources in the Traffic Police, at about 8.00 Dorin Chirtoaca drove a Toyota-Camry along Bucuresti Street. He wanted to turn to Vlaicu Parcalab Street, ignoring the sign that banned the turn to the left. When turning left, the mayor’s car was hit by another car in the right lateral back side. As a result of the impact, the mayor’s car made a 90-degree turn and hit a Toyota-Corolla in the left back side. All the three cars were damaged insignificantly. No one was injured.
The traffic policemen that arrived at the scene insisted that Dorin Chirtoaca should go to the Traffic Police Department to take the breath test. But the mayor refused, saying he has an urgent meeting with the heads of the city’s district offices. He came to the Police Department to take the test two hours later, reason for which he was accused of flagrantly breaking the legislation as the breath test must be taken within 45 minutes of the accident. At the same time, the press was announced that the mayor is a ‘recidivist’ as he was fined for speeding last summer. The mayor has not yet paid this fine, said the Chisinau Traffic Police, which is a subdivision of the Municipal Police subordinated to the local administration.
