Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca announced during the working meeting Monday, September 10, about the beginning of a long-term friendship between the local public administration and the city police. Three leaders of the city police forces – the municipal Police, the Road Police and the Regiment of Patrol and Sentinel Forces “Shield” have each asked the local administration to efficiently finance the police in order to overcome the current problems. The Chief of the Road Police, Ion Vozian, requested the creation of a City Commission for managing all problems concerning the road traffic in Chisinau. He also asked for an examination of the possibility to complete the road police forces by 60 officers as well as to initiate a petition to the Government for modifying the legislation, in order to allow towing away the illegally parked cars. He also requested financial support for acquiring new police transport units. Deputy Chief of the City Police Iacob Gumenita stated that Police forces are involved in almost every field of activity of the City Hall; however, they are unable to face all the problems without proper financing. Particularly, he mentioned that at this moment it is necessary to allocate immediate financial resources for the “Shield” Regiment, who risks failing in its activities, due to lack of money even for fuel. The Chief of the Regiment of Patrol and Sentinel Forces “Shield”, Constantin Avornic, stated that on Tuesday (September 11) the 5 teams of 902 service, who must react promptly to any call, will not be able to come out from the garages. He also mentioned that the Regiment is also worried about the old equipment, for which it requested an additional financial support. Dorin Chirtoaca promised the Police that during the next session of the Chisinau City Council, these problems will be discussed; however, he asked the police forces to respect the rights and liberties of the citizens, including getting rid of the practice of arresting the persons involved in peaceful protests and manifestations. Also, he stated that joint projects will see little progress if the police continue to act like on August 31, when the law enforcement bodies ignored the authorisations of the local administration and banned sale of beer in the National Assembly Square. Concerning the situation of the Regiment “Shield”, Chirtoaca stated that he will examine the situation together with the Department of Finance in order to allocate additional funds. However, the Mayor said that in the future the budget will include allocations of funds strictly following the necessities, without overestimation and with an efficient further management.
