On March 28, 20:30, small towns and big cities around the world are urged to switch off their lights for an hour in a worldwide campaign against global warming, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Different activities to promote Earth Hour will take place in the Great National Assembly Square in Chisinau, including a flashmob meeting and a concert that will start at 17.00 and end at 20.30. The event will be also marked in other statements of the country.
If all the household users in Moldova disconnect the electric power on March 23, between 20.30 and 21.30, there will be saved 278,000 kilowatts, says a communiqué issued by Gas Natural Fenosa. Some 86,800 m3 of gas are consumed to produce this quantity of electricity. As many as 165 tonnes of gas with greenhouse effect is emitted by burning such an amount of gas.
During Earth Hour last year, lights were switched off on the section of Stefan cel Mare Blvd. between the streets Banulescu-Bodoni and Pushkin and in a number of public institutions, banks and offices. The population was asked to turn off the lights at home.
Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. Chisinau joined the event in 2008. This year the action will involve over 130 countries.
