The initiative of Gagauz politicians to collect signatures for holding a referendum on Gagauzia gaining independence from Moldova looks rather like blackmail against Chisinau, considers political analyst Ivan Grec, who is a Doctor of History, IPN reports.
According to the information portal Gagauzinfo.md, the analyst said the given initiative can become a great concern for the Gagauz people. Ivan Grec considers that a new crisis in the relations between Chisinau and Comrat is caused by the fact that Moldova comes closer to Romania.
The analyst believes that the initiative to hold a referendum on Gagauzia gaining independence from Moldova is useless. If the intention is put into practice, it can destroy Moldova’s statehood and will thus contribute to Moldova’s union with Romania without guarantees that Gagauzia will be recognized at international level.
A group of people from the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia announced that they collected over 5,000 signatures in 25 villages in support of holding a referendum on Gagauzia becoming independent.
