Chisinau hosts Moldova ICT Summit 2016

Leaders from the information technology industry, authorities, representatives of the academic community, development partners, investors, experts from the country and abroad will consider possibilities of developing the ICT sector in Moldova in the two-day Moldova ICT Summit 2016. Within the event, there will be presented new ICT products and services. Specialists from Moldova will be able to find out modern practices in the field and methods of inversing in IT entrepreneurship, IPN reports.

In the opening of the summit, Minister of Information and Communication Technology Vasile Botnari said the development of the ICT sector is a priority for the Republic of Moldova and the country has real growth potential in this sector. Among the results achieved in this sector are the creation of the common emergency telephone number 112 and of the Center of Excellence in IT.

Attending the event, Prime Minister Pavel Filip said there are many relevant initiatives that envision the development of the IT sector such as the creation of the electronic one-stop shop and introduction of the digital employment record book. In another development, the Premier said the information and communication technology is an efficient instrument in the fight against corruption.

For his part, Speaker of Parliament Adrian Candu said the legislature will support the initiatives in the ICT sector. The Law on IT Parks is an invitation for the country.  Over the next few years, the ICT sector could represent 20-30% of the Gross Domestic Product.

U.S. Ambassador to Moldova James Pettit said the development of the ICT sector leads to the creation of jobs and to greater governmental transparency, while Moldova became an important IT destination. Swedish Ambassador in Chisinau Signe Burgstaller noted that Moldova has potential to develop the ICT sector and Sweden is ready to share its experience in this field.

The first Moldova ICT Summit was held in 2010. The summit is a platform for effective dialogue between the key participants in the ICT sector – the Government, business sector, education sector and the development partners – for developing the ICT industry and for efficiently implementing ICT in the traditional sectors.
