The Human Rights Film Festival is taking place at the Odeon Cinema on December 2-8, staged by the Moldovan Institute for Human Rights (IDOM).

Contacted by IPN, the organizers said there will be shown over 50 documentaries and short and long feature films. This is the fifth festival of the kind and its slogan this year is “Know your rights by film”.

There are seven days of festival and seven areas of human rights that will be addressed, namely the right to freedom of expression, the rights of persons with disabilities, the rights of persons who live with HIV/AIDS, medical malpractice and violation of the rights of patients, human rights in societies in transition, domestic violence, diversity and nondiscrimination. The screenings are accompanied by panel discussions, offering thus the public the possibility of discussing with human rights specialists and experts, lawyers and public functionaries and representatives of the Government and civil society.

More than 1,500 students from 57 schools are expected at the festival. The sowings intended for students will take place in the first half of the day, within the section “Education by film”.

The festival also includes the Mobile Film School for persons with disabilities. Thus, nine persons with special needs will learn to make films on human rights and to propose solutions to the problems raised in these films. For the purpose, IDOM will provide the participants with a mobile phone. All the films made within the Mobile Film School will be screened on December 8. The best film will be awarded.

The festival opens at 5pm. At 6:30pm, there will be shown the journalistic documentary “Rights and injustices”, made by Radio Free Europe. Discussions on the issue “Right to freedom of expression” will be held afterward. Simon Klose’s film “TPB AFK: the pirate bay away from keyboard”, which is a co-production of Sweden, Denmark, Norway, the UK, Germany and the Netherlands, will be screened at 7.30pm.

The whole program of the festival is available on the IDOM’s website and on the Facebook page of the event. Entrance is free of charge.
